Jewellery is something that connects us very directly with people from the past. Our collection includes Roman brooches, earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces which look exactly like jewellery we would wear today. Roman clothes had no buttons or zips, so brooches were worn by men and women to fasten clothing together. So this hare brooch had a practical use, but it was also decorative and symbolic. For the Romans, hares represented love and fertility. They were also kept as pets.
