This is one of the oldest objects in our collection. It’s the fossil of an ichthyosaur, a marine reptile that lived at least 90 million years ago and swam in the seas at the time of the dinosaurs. The fossil was probably found on the Yorkshire coast. Maybe someone who lived in Greenwich collected fossils and donated the ichthyosaur to the museum. It has recently been restored thanks to a grant from Arts Council England.
Objects like this help us learn about the past. We continue to collect objects and stories from the Royal Borough of Greenwich for the future. We would particularly like to hear about your experiences during the pandemic. Please click here to tell us your own ichthyo-story.
