Lesnes Abbey glass

These fragments of stained glass come from Lesnes Abbey in Abbey Wood. An abbey is a Christian religious community where a group of people live together to worship and to help others. It was founded in 1178 and closed in 1525 during a period of religious upheaval across the whole country known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

The site where Lesnes Abbey once stood was excavated in the early 1900s. Although you may think these fragments don’t look important, they can help archaeologists understand more about the Abbey and the monks who lived there.
