Comb

This comb, like our pewter spoon, is an everyday object. This one dates from the 1600s and was excavated in Charlton during the redevelopment of the buildings at 47-67 The Village.

As they are today, combs were used then in different ways – for grooming hair, for decoration or for removing parasites like fleas and nits. You can even make music using a comb and paper.

Hairdressers and barbers use combs when they are cutting and styling our hair. Their businesses were badly affected when they had to close during the pandemic. Do you have a hairdresser story to tell us from the pandemic, or maybe even a photo of a lockdown haircut?!
