Egyptian cat mummy

Believe it or not, this is a mummified cat from Ancient Egypt. Cats had a special place in Egyptian society. As well as being kept as pets, they were also linked to the gods. Mummified cats like this one were used as religious offerings.

We have some other Ancient Egyptian objects in our collection, donated by Dr Sidney Davies in 1913. He lived in Plumstead but had previously worked in Egypt at a time when it was a British colony. Did he bring this cat back to remind him of his time in Egypt?
