About the Exhibition

In Living in Greenwich: Tales through Time we have chosen some of the most interesting objects from our collection to explore the lives of people who were here before us. We can learn from both the ordinary and extraordinary things left behind by history. It has been a very unusual year and what we collect now will help us tell people in the future about the pandemic.

As we get into more brisk weather here in Greenwich, we're taking a look in our archives at the 9th November 1878 edition of the Kentish Independent, where they were chatting about maple trees. Maple trees take a glorious place in our autumn skyline, from our own field maples to Norway Maples to Canada's sugar maples. The latter, given, as this article mentions, "a cold north-west wind, with frosty nights and sunny days" (sound familiar?), produces the maple syrup that is becoming increasingly popular here in England as a sweet treat and sugar replacement.⠀

As part of Meet the Collection, Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust is hosting an Artist-in Residence. The artist’s work will be inspired by Royal Greenwich’s rich and varied Museum Collection and Archive. The selected artist will work to introduce the collection to new audiences by collaborating with a chosen community organisation or charity working with adults at risk of social isolation.⠀

If the history of Royal Greenwich fascinates you and you would be interested in researching and bringing the Borough's everyday and hidden histories to new audiences in innovative and engaging ways, we are keen to hear from you. We welcome your proposal on how you would respond to Royal Greenwich's collections to produce an outcome collaboratively with your chosen local community organisation or charity.⠀

Some of the histories in our archive are happy, hilarious, honourable… and some are downright horrible.⠀

Such is the case for this poster in our collection from February 1818, offering a £500 reward (the equivalent of roughly £44,000 today) for information about the murders of retired tradesman George Bird and his housekeeper Mary Simmons. The case gained considerable interest across Greenwich, as several weeks went by before an arrest was made. Before a packed court in Maidstone, sailor Charles Hussey, whose sister had found Mr Bird and Mrs Simmons’s watches among his possessions, was convicted of both murders in July. He was executed in early August. ⠀
