Chess set

This Nigerian chess set has beautiful carved figures. Played by two people moving figures across a chequered board, chess is thought to have begun in India over 1000 years ago. We also have in our collection a drum from the Benin region of Nigeria. Many of us have been playing board games with our families during the pandemic, as well as taking up new instruments. What games and instruments have you been playing at home?

As well as thinking about how these objects were used, we can ask how they came to be in a museum and who donated them. We have very little information – if you can tell us more, please get in touch.
