Isabella Beeton was a celebrity cookery writer 170 years ago, famous like Mary Berry or Nadiya Hussain. Her Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management, first published in 1861, was a guide to running a Victorian middle-class household. It includes advice on cleaning, laundry and treating family medical problems. Written at a time when middle class families had servants, it also gives tips on how to manage them.
Most of the book is about preparing food, with hundreds of recipes ranging from simple omelettes to five course meals. How many vegetables shown in one of the pictures have you eaten?
