A really beautiful object in our collection is this girl’s wedding coat. It comes from the Hindu Lohana community, originally from the Sind region of south-eastern Pakistan. It would have been worn with trousers and a head shawl, and made by the bride, her mother and other female family members
In 1986, our museum worked on a project exploring wedding customs in the Borough and bought this elegant coat to add to our collection. Sadly we don’t know the name of its owner. In this online exhibition you can see another, very different wedding outfit from the 1930s. What would you wear to a wedding?
