One of Greenwich’s most famous lost buildings is the Tudor Palace of Placentia. Three British monarchs – Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I – were born there. The Palace was demolished leaving very little trace and the Royal Naval College was later built on its site.
This floor tile – with its picture of a horse and rider – is an example of the kind of finely decorated features found at the Palace of Placentia. Even small objects such as this can connect us to a vanished royal world on our doorstep.
